walkLEX: The Children of Downtown

Lexington has a number of statues in the downtown area. Three utilize children as their figures; one is a water-fountain and one is a fountain. Each are unique At the Sayre School on North Limestone, two children are playing leapfrog: At the northern end of Gratz Park, a young boy shows a young girl his sailboat as they sit atop a rock. The statue is part of a fountain. It was a gift "to the city's children" from 19th century author and Lexingtonian James Lane Allen. In front of the old Fayette Courthouse stands Trois Enfants dans le Font , a useful statue of three children in the nude clutching a tree (which is topped by a light fixture). Beneath the children is a water fountain for adults and at ground level, "a drink for our friend."

No Destination: Silas Baptist Church

Silas Baptist Church, Cynthiana, Ky. In 1798, land was given to the Cooper's Run Church by Charles Smith, Jr. Two years later, 20 congregants left Cooper's Run to form Silas Baptist Church. For fifty years, the church worshipped in a log structure. In 1850, the present brick structure was erected (with significant remodeling done in 1902). It is the oldest, continuously operating church in Harrison County. The church is a member of the independent, Elkhorn Baptist Association. Marker 1596 reads: Organized by 20 members of the Cooper's Run Church in 1800, with the help of Ambrose Dudley, George Eve and Augustine Eastin. They built at this site on land given, 1798, by Charles Smith, Sr. The log structure was replaced by a brick house of worship in 1850 and redecorated in 1902. What and where is Lexington's New Street?

Map of Downtown Lexington, Ky. ( LexingtonKY.gov ) On my lunch walk yesterday, I found myself at one end of my favorite streets in downtown Lexington: New Street. Or what I thought was its end. This little one block road reminds me of a narrow way in Boston which in itself conjures up imagery of our nation's colonial history. I've also been fond of this little road and I've mentioned it once before following a BGT deTour of Clyde Carpenter's carriage house: Every time I pass down Lexington's New Street, a one block path between North Mill and North Broadway, I am taken away to the narrow, history-filled streets of Boston, Mass. The narrow street, nestled between a busy road and beautiful Gratz Park, has a variety of architectural styles -- all relatively traditional -- that are perfectly scaled to the street's width. Metes and bounds: Measuring up Kentucky

Used for centuries in England, the system of describing land by its metes and bounds is a common way of describing an area of land. Surveyors and other professionals utilize the system to specifically identify parcels of land though errors by the early surveyors creating much trouble in the early days. Even with today's surveys being done largely with technological advantage, it is possible for a call to be reversed and the wrong parcel be conveyed or mortgaged. The system of measured, however, is best understood by looking at the historic nature of how Kentucky itself came into being.
